As Golf Communities Lose Popularity, Real-Estate Developers Change Course

Golf greens are making way for more casual, community-geared developments.

In 2010, VanTrust Real Estate purchased Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club, a 136-acre site, for $4.2 million in Prairie Village, KS. Today, 52 acres were developed into housing, a senior living facility and a boutique hotel. The other 84 acres were developed into a park with an activity center, sledding hill, adventure playground and green space.

“The result was one-third private development and two-thirds public green space,” says Justin Duff, Senior Director of Development at VanTrust.
